1.Choose 'branded' GU10 LED lamps with chipsets from Cree, Bridgelux, Everlight.

Genuinely powerful GU10 LED spotlights are likely to be built using the latest chipsets from leading US LED chip manufacturer Cree's X-Lamp range. Cree chipsets are of the highest quality, producing staggering amounts of light from minimal wattages, with very useable colour temperatures and excellent colour rendition. You can also expect similar quality and performance from the likes of Bridgelux, Epistar, Edison and Luxeon. If the manufacturer isn't mentioned in the description of an LED lamp you're considering, we suggest you tread carefully.

2.Look for Lumen output, not Watts

GU10 LED spotlights are available in a range of lumen outputs equivalent to wattages from 20w to 50w or more with beam angles ranging from 25 degrees to 120 degrees to suit your requirements. You should always compare the brightness of LED GU10 spotlights based on their stated output in lumens, not the power consumption in watts. Recent EU legislation requires the light output of all lamps to be stated in lumens, regardless of their technology. Terms such as 'Super-bright', 'Hyper-bright' and so on are not technical descriptions of light output and obviously cannot be used for comparison purposes. If you are offered an LED lightbulb without being told the output in lumens you should look elsewhere because you have no way of knowing how much light it can produce, no matter how many superlatives might be used in the description.
